QUEERMAS: When Home for the Holidays Isn't Possible
Celebrate the Season Supporting LGBTQ and Homeless Youth
(December 12, 2017 Phoenix AZ) ─ The saying "home for the holidays" doesn't exist for hundreds of LGBTQ youth in and around the Valley. They are on the streets or bunking up in someone's home after being pushed out because of their family's discomfort with their sexual orientation or gender identity. Other youth ages 14-24 might face bullying or challenges that simply prevent them from celebrating the season. To make this challenging time a bit more bearable, one-n-ten calls on the community to lift their spirits and make sure there is something to celebrate on the holiday.
one-n-ten is partnering with various bars, restaurants, churches and coffee shops around the Valley to help collect a few necessities and fun gift items through December 21st. The effort helps lift the confidence and spirit of these teens and young adults, which may be the only time these youth can untie a bow and rip open the wrapping paper for a moment of delight.
Thanks to nearly 20 businesses, community angels can find out what's on the "holiday wish list" and make that donation to the organization as they play Santa for the youth on Christmas Day. Coffee shops and neighborhood bars are making sure the public can fulfill individual wishes with a personalized gift. That "Holiday Wish List" includes everything from bus passes to make sure a young adult can get to school or work, shoes to make their way around, gift cards for items such as groceries, a jacket, quick meals at a restaurant, or even books. When the youth arrive to receive their treats on Christmas Day at the Youth Center, the celebration will be rounded out with a hot meal, caroling and even an appearance from Mr. and Mrs. Claus!
Gift collection efforts are done through small Adopt-A-Diva Christmas trees displayed at a number of locations (see below). Patrons can select a tag off the tree and fulfill the wish of the youth. Gifts need to be turned in to one-n-ten by Wednesday, December 20 between the hours of 10AM-4:30PM so the elves can show up to wrap the items appropriately for each youth in need. The drop off location is 1101 N. Central Ave., Suite #202 Phoenix, AZ 85004. Donations may be brought in unwrapped or in gift bags.
